Description:
This typeface has become one of the most popular freeware fonts on the net, and is often nicknamed the "Austin Powers" font due to its obvious 60's feel.

I'd noticed it in use on a title page for a souvenir photo album of pictures from the mid-60's TV show "Where The Action Is". (I work for Steve Alaimo, who co-hosted the show.)

After pencil-tracing and modifying the letters to form a complete alphabet, the sketches were sent to Brad Nelson of Brain Eaters Font Co. for fine-tuning and scanning into a digital font.

According to Brad, the posting of the font at Stu's Font Diner (where he also has his own font section) resulted in over 5000 downloads.

Since then, we have learned of another use of the font; as the title of the best-selling book "Coffee, Tea or Me?". It seems the original font had a lower-case set, which I had not been aware of. I do not know the name of the original design, but our font has obviously been reconstructed with original letter forms taking the place of missing characters.

Now, with the assistance of Ray Larabie, I bring you "Action Is JL" (the original) and the variations "Diagonal", "Wider" and "Wide Diagonal".

Creator Info:
I spent the first eleven years of my life in Brooklyn, New York's Crown Heights section, attending P.S. 161 and living a fairly uneventful youth. Somewhere around the time I was in third grade, a fellow student brought a lettering stencil to school with him. I was fascinated by the ability to trace around the piece of paper with the cut-out alphabet and make fancy letters from it. Soon after, I started to collect almost every Stenso Lettering Guide I could get my hands on...in various sizes and styles of type.

My thoughts about font design:

Please consider the fact it takes many hours to design and create a font... even a different interpretation of an old favorite. To rename an existing font, or to make slight modifications to its file and claim it as your original is no different than any other form of theft.

In fact, why pirate a font if it is available for free on the web? Equally, commercial or shareware designers deserve the fees they ask for their fonts. If they are deriving income from their designs, they should be compensated. If you are fortunate enough to hold a job, think about how you would feel if someone else received your paycheck for the time you worked...

In other words, if you have downloaded a file from the net which is, in fact an unauthorized copy of a commercial font, or if you possess a font which has been classified shareware and have not paid for any of these fonts...you have deprived someone from honest income for honest work.

You may use my fonts for commercial works, but NOT for "stand alone" or "stock art" designs which you re-sell.

This said, enjoy my font. Again, it is freeware...but not to be sold in any form whatsoever. Feel free to share this font with your friends, lovers and co-workers--but do not charge for the copy. Your cooperation is expected and appreciated.

Your mother will know if you've been less than honorable!
